Dear Parents/Guardians,

The math department welcomes you to a new year at Miller Jr. High. This is our second year of implementing a new program entitled Connected Mathematics 2 (CMP2). This is a problem-centered curriculum that uses an inquiry-based instructional model that will enable our students to develop deep understanding of key mathematical ideas.

The goals of Connected Mathematics 2 are to help students:

· Develop mathematical knowledge, understanding, and skill

· Develop the capacity to define and solve problems with reason, insight, inventiveness, and technical proficiency

· Build on and make connections among mathematical ideas and concepts

· See the connections between mathematics and other disciplines

In CMP2, the instructional practices of the teacher and the ways in which students engage in mathematics support these goals. Teaching, learning, and assessing are aligned with each other as integral parts of Connected Mathematics 2.

For further information, please visit the CMP Parent Web Site: http://www.math.msu.edu/cmp/parents

We believe every student can be successful in math with a positive attitude, effort, and the required materials. In addition, it is imperative that your child comes to school on a daily basis as math concepts build on each other. Your child will need the following supplies by the end of the first week of school to be a successful math student:

one 1 _ inch 3 ring binder, 6 index tabs/dividers

pencil pouch for binder

pencils and erasers

blue or black ballpoint pens for correcting

hand-held pencil sharpener

loose-leaf college ruled notebook paper (no spiral)

_ inch graph paper

basic scientific calculator (optional)

ruler (optional)

We look forward to working with you and your child this year. Please feel free to contact us at school at 538-2100 or by email. Please sign below and have your student return this to his/her teacher.
