We are writing to advise you of two important events coming up in your child’s
health education class. This year we are enhancing the first aid instruction in
our health classes. This segment of instruction will last 5 days and will be
taught by a guest instructor, Denny Bickar. Mr. Bickar is a retired volunteer
fireman with the Central Park Fire Department and teaches CPR and First Aid
certification for staff and coaches in the
Because there is an expense in obtaining the first aid card, each student is being asked to pay a nominal fee of $2.00. The fee will be collected by Mr. Engelhart prior to the course which will be taught sometime in mid to late May.. We understand that in some instances, the $2.00 fee can pose a hardship. We have funds available to assist families who need assistance. Please send a note to the teacher with your child if you need help with this fee.
We believe that certifying students in first aid gives them meaningful skills that will serve them well in life. In fact, what they learn may even save your life some day.
We will also be teaching a unit on HIV/AIDS the first part
of June. In 1988, the Washington State Legislature passed the AIDS Omnibus
Bill. This bill mandates AIDS prevention education yearly for all common school
students in grades 5-12. Those parents wishing to excuse their son/daughter
from this program must attend a curriculum meeting or preview the curriculum
guides and sign a waiver removing their son/daughter from instruction. A copy
of the HIV/AIDS (“KNOW”) Curriculum is also available in the main office for
preview anytime during the school day. This year’s AIDS Curriculum parent
meeting will be held in room 135 at
If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming first aid unit or the HIV/AIDS unit, please call the school at 538-2100.
Sincerely,
Mr. Engelhart - Health Teacher
